Sexually Transmissible Infections (STIs)
STIs are infections that can be passed on during unprotected sex (sex without a condom) with someone who has the STI. Sex includes vaginal, anal, oral sex.
A lot of the time STIs don't have any symptoms, so you don't know you have them. An STI test is the only way to know for sure if you have an STI. These tests are quick and easy and are usually free or low cost.
STI Testing
Before you get tested, your health care worker may ask some questions about the kinds of sex you are having.
There is no need to feel embarrassed or worried you will get in trouble, these questions help to make sure you are getting all the tests that you need to keep you safe and well.
These tests may include a urine sample, blood test, and swabs (vaginal, anal and/or throat). The types of tests depend on the types of sex you are having, which is why it is important to be honest with your health care worker.
Prevention
Remember that condoms are the only form of contraception that will protect you from both STIs and unplanned pregnancy. Use water-based lubricant when you use a condom because this will help stop the condom from breaking and make sex more pleasurable.
