NuvaRing

The NuvaRing® is a soft plastic ring that contains the hormones oestrogen and progestogen. It is inserted inside the vagina to protect against pregnancy. The NuvaRing® doesn't prevent you from getting a sexually transmissible infection (STI) so it is important to also use condoms.

How does it work?

The NuvaRing® works by releasing 2 hormones (oestrogen and progestogen) which:

1. temporarily prevent ovulation (an egg from being released from the ovaries every month)
2. thicken the discharge (juices) from the cervix to help stop sperm from reaching the womb (uterus).

How to use it:

1. Squeeze the ring between your thumb and finger
2. Gently insert the tip into your vagina
3. Slowly push the ring up your vagina using your index finder until it feels comfortable
3. Unlike a diaphragm, the ring does not need to cover the entrance to your womb to work, but if it feels uncomfortable you may not have pushed it far enough up
4. To remove the ring, insert a finger into your vagina and hook it around the edge of the ring to gently pull it out.

Things to consider:

  • You have to remember to insert a new ring
    every month
  • Regular and less painful bleeds.
  • People can choose to skip bleed
  • May not be the best form of contraception for everyone - check with your GP or health profession to see if it is right for you
  • Most people have no problems with using it
    during sex
  • You can put in yourself.
